Outdoor Sports Activities for Kids

Sports activities for kids are a great way to get them physically fit and to channel their energy in the right direction. In this following article, we will give you examples of some of the activities that you can use.
As kids, you and I never tagged anything as ‘sports’ or games, you know? It was all just a whole lot of fun and games. It didn’t matter if it was playing hopscotch or counting the number of rounds one could do with the hula hoop or the shooting of basketballs even. Today we tag it as sports and physical activities because there is the influx of video games, television and other factors that have lessened the importance of outdoor physical activity. All the more reason for one to bring in some outdoor sports activities for kids then. These sports activities will not only get the kids physically fit, but will also help them develop and hone their analytical and problem solving abilities, which, as we all know is the crux of all sports. In the following sections, we will give you examples of some of the best sports activities that you can start your kids on.

Fun and Easy Outdoor Sports Activities for Kids

With childhood obesity on the rise, there is a growing concern among parents to prevent the same from happening to their kids. In that direction, here are some of the best activities that you can introduce into your kids' routines.

Hurdle Race
Put the element of fun in something and you’ll have ever willing takers. No forcing or convincing required. So what you do is find a ground that is large enough to arrange for some sports activities. Then you get about arranging for as many things as you can think of like hula hoops, skipping ropes, ladders, etc. Etch out a plan and use all this equipment to create a relay race. To make it even more fun, invite a couple of kids so that there is the element of competition, which helps in promoting certain qualities required for team building. Divide the kids into teams and start out on the race. For example, they have to cross from the starting line to the finish line while crossing hurdles, doing hula hoop rounds etc. The team that manages to cross over first, wins.

Trampoline Basketball
The newest fad, and one with a twist to a normal game of basketball, no less? Trampoline basketball. Instead of the regular game of basketball, which is no doubt one of the most effective physical activities, you add to the intensity of the workout by introducing a trampoline as well. The trampoline is placed at both ends of the court near the baskets and the kid has to jump onto the trampoline to dunk the ball into the basket. This requires energy and precision and is a whole lot of fun as well. Make sure that the kids have been given the safety gear and are told to be careful when undertaking this sport.

Cycling Expeditions
All kids will have a bike growing up. It’s a given activity for most kids in their childhood. So convincing them to use a cycle is never a problem. Things can definitely be made more interesting by including their friends in it and perhaps taking them for a cycling road trip for the duration of a morning.

Other Sports
Many parents will choose to enroll their kids into authentic sports and activities. These ensure that the kids not only play the games but also learn the complexities and techniques that each individual sports brings with it. Some of the most popular sports that are opted for are basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, badminton, and hockey.

Fun Games and Sports
While these are the ‘hardcore’ sports activities that can be started out for the kids, there are several such outdoor activities for kids that run more on the theme of fun while still retaining the physical benefits that they provide for. These activities include - limbo, skating, archery, rock climbing, trekking and hiking, dancing and others.

These are a mix of some of the best outdoor sports activities for kids that you can look into. These include not only the most popular sports activities, but also those that have an element of fun in them and thus require no coaxing. Plan out a good program and gift your kid a good health and lots of fun.

Family Activities for the Park

When the weather is nice, taking a trip to the local park can be a fun way to spend the afternoon outside with your family. When you get tired of the same old playground routine, try some of the other fun activities suggested in this article for an exciting day outdoors.
A Day at the Park
Going to the park with your family is a time-honored tradition during the warmer months. Whether you live in the city or in a more rural area, spending time outside in a public place is rewarding for children and adults alike, so no one has to compromise in order to enjoy quality time. In order to make the most of your spring and summer park trips, though, you might want to consider trying a few new activities. With a little creativity, there are endless fun things to do at the local park.

The Limits of Playgrounds
The most common thing for kids to do at the park is play on the playground equipment. This is great because kids get exercise, get to interact with other kids, and can stay happy for hours on end. For parents, however, playground time is sometimes not quite as exciting. It’s nice to socialize with other parents and enjoy watching the little ones at play, but we grown-ups can’t easily participate in the playground fun - at least not without alarming the other parents! If you need a break from sitting on the sidelines and watching kids have all the fun, try doing something away from the playground equipment in an open field or grassy area of the park.

Frisbees, Balls, and Other Park Toys
Soft Frisbees and balls are great things to bring to the park and enjoy with your kids. Parents can participate in playing catch, and there are numerous possibilities for playing with park toys like these. Whether you and your family prefer to casually toss the Frisbee around while talking and joking together or engaging in a more competitive, sport-like style of play, you can enjoy the fresh air and physical activity together. Other lawn games and toys like badminton and hula hoops, can easily be taken to the park for an afternoon of fun.

Fly a Kite
If the weather is too breezy for Frisbee tossing, it might be just perfect for flying a kite. Kite flying is a wonderful family fun activity, because there are enough different levels of difficulty to amuse everyone. Children who are too small to fly the kite themselves can have fun chasing its movements and helping older siblings hold the string. Slightly older kids could enjoy learning to fly the kite, which is easy enough for children to learn but challenging enough to be a rewarding bonding experience between siblings or between children and parents. Teens and parents can enjoy the challenge of making kites do tricks and stay in the air as long as possible, and the whole family can take turns testing their luck. Best of all, kites are inexpensive and can be used in almost any open space on a breezy day.

Pack a Picnic
After you and your family tire of Frisbees and kites, your first thought might be to head home for lunch or a snack. However, bringing a snack or picnic lunch along can add an exciting element to the day out and can allow the family to enjoy more park time together. If the family has scattered to different areas of the park in pursuit of different activities, a picnic lunch can be a good opportunity for everyone to come back together spend quality time together. For kids, picnics are often so exciting that everyday foods like sandwiches and apples seem more appetizing. If you decide to pack a picnic lunch, just remember to bring a bag or container for any garbage and dispose of it appropriately to keep the park looking its best!

Bring Inside Games With You
If you are still struggling for ideas about good park activities, consider bringing some of your at-home activities to the park with you. If your kids have favorite toys or games, consider whether they would work outdoors. Card games and board games can be easily taken to the park if you bring along a blanket and take care not to lose any game pieces. This can give you all a chance to get out of the house and into the outdoors without missing out on the fun at-home activities.

Outdoor Games for Small Groups

Outdoor games claim a significant place in our lives. Planning outdoor games for small groups gets quite difficult because there are a few players. The following article offers some fascinating ideas about outdoor games for small groups.
Outdoor games play a vital role in overall physical and mental development. Considering the fast paced life today, the nature of jobs has totally changed. The jobs that are computer centric hardly allows for a wide range of body movements. Because of such a mechanical kind of routines, somewhere we feel the need to experience change in activities and some relaxation. And this expected change can be obtained from picnics and outdoor parties.

Importance of Outdoor Games

Outdoor games, during picnics and outdoor parties, serve the purpose of fun and enjoyment for every age group. Apart from fun and enjoyment, these bring people together (in case of adults) developing a healthy relationship amongst each other. Organizing these activities, especially, for kids is very important because it helps in their overall development. For kids, though, games mean just fun and these must be simple and well planned. These should not be too strength oriented and there should be many of these as children gets easily tired of the sameness. There are outdoor games even for senior citizens that are specifically designed for them considering their age, health conditions and physical strength. Also there can be a variety of games for youths that let them release pent up energy. What I want to say is that there are outdoor games available for each age group you can imagine.

List of Outdoor games

Game Description
Water Fight

A Water pool can be the best venue for adults to play water fight using water guns. Divide the players (6-8) into two groups. Every player will have a circular ring worn on the head with the paper ring in front of his/her face. Each one will try to tear the opponent's ring by shooting water at it from the water gun, at the same time saving his/her own ring. The team that saves maximum rings wins. Kids can play a simple version of this game. A kid stands still with an apple or such an object on his head. His opponents squirts water at the apple with the water gun. The team with the more hits wins the game.
Hide and Seek

Most of us have played this game during childhood. It does not require any equipments and can be played among 6-7 players. The seeker counts up to a certain pre decided number by the team. Before the time is up, other players hide in different places around and the seeker has to find them all. The first person caught becomes the seeker for next round. This game can be played by children, youngsters and adults, too.
Dodge Ball

A volleyball or a ball of its size is required to play this game. Let us say we have 6 players, out of which 1 stands in the circle formed by the others. The players forming the circle try to hit the insider with the ball, who tries to dodge it. The insider, after getting hit is out and is supposed to join those forming the circle. The player who scores a hit, gets the chance to dodge the ball. This game can be played by teenagers, adults and even children.
Dance and Freeze

Minimum 5 players are essential for this game and a music system is required. One person operates the music player. All the participants should dance in the craziest way they can, till the music is on. When the music stops, all of them should freeze in whichever position they are. Its fun to watch them in funny postures. The person who makes movement before he or she is allowed, looses and has to stay out of the next round. The game goes on till there is only one player i.e. the winner of the game.
Sack Races

Sack racing is easy to play and requires few players. Burlap sacks are the equipments required to play this game. Arrange a race course. Ask the players to get into the sacks and make them stand at the start line. The players have to hop to reach the finish line. This can lead to very funny situations with the players hopping and stumbling to out do each others. Care should be taken because someone may fall while hopping and get injured. Children, adults and youngsters, all can enjoy this game.
Tennis

This game can be played with 2-4 people. It requires a field with a net. Senior citizens, adults and youngsters can play it. Though it requires some skill, players can vary the pace of the game easily to suit them. These games provide good exercise to the body.
Balancing

This is a game where two players make a team. Notebooks and bricks are the required instruments. Let us name the partners as P1 and P2. P1 will have to keep a notebook on his/her head. He/she has to walk to the finish line on the bricks that P2 will place at each step. P1 should not let his feet touch the ground. The player who reaches the finish line first, without dropping the book as well as touching the ground wins the game for his/her team. This game is preferable for adults as well as youngsters.
Run and Find 5 Different...

The number of players necessary for this game is 5-6. One player will name a color, for example, red. The next moment other players should run to find 5 things of that color within the specific area. These things could be leaves, paper or pebbles. The things collected should be strictly from the outdoor area. The player who comes back first with 5 things of that particular color, wins the game. Instead of color you can also use other characteristics of objects or things like a particular size or shape. This game can be played by children but, care should be taken that they do not enter any danger zone.

Attending a school, college, office or managing a house sometime, subjects us to stress, frustration, fatigue and so on. If we try, we can still regain or restore our sunny nature and derive enjoyment. All we have to do is use weekend, to organize a get together and play different outdoor games. In addition to allowing us to derive enjoyment and have some fun, the outdoor games also keep us healthy and refreshed for the upcoming strenuous activities.
