Job Interview Tips

Develop your interview skills with this preparation guide on job interview techniques, strategies, tips, questions and answers. Learn about how to prepare for an interview, what to wear to job interviews, common interview questions, and how to answer tough job interview questions.
In a job interview, an employer evaluates a potential employee to establish how suitable he or she is to serve within the company. Such an interview always takes place in some form of the other before the employer makes a decision to hire. Before an interview, the employer scans resumes sent by various aspiring employees to shortlist the likeliest candidates. These resumes will reflect the minimum qualifications and experience that the employer requires for the post.

Interviewing as a method for selecting an ideal candidate is an inherently flawed process. This is because it is almost impossible to judge a candidate’s true aptitude and experience in a job interview. However, job interviews allow the employer to decide with which candidate he or she is most comfortable. A lot depends on personal insight and good judgment on the part of the interviewer. Unfortunately, modern HR procedures concern themselves with hiring candidates as quickly as possible. This is because HR personnel usually have a monetary stake in fast hiring.

A well-structured job interview process takes place at multiple levels. A telephonic screening round will usually precede an actual face-to-face interview. This allows the employer of human resources expert to establish the candidate’s overall capabilities and motivation. If a candidate passes this round, he or she may attend a personal interview with the HR personnel. The candidate may face a single interviewer or an interviewing board, consisting of two or more company representatives. These will question the candidate on various different aspects of his or her professional life, career aspirations and overall ability.

The gravity, complexity and difficulty of a job interview depend largely on the job for which the candidate has applied. ‘Blue collar’ or functional job interviews are generally less demanding than ‘white collar’ or executive job interviews. Accordingly, everything from dress code and the candidate’s overall presentation have different bearings on the job interview’s outcome.

In certain artistically oriented professions, job interviews can also include a form of audition. The candidate is required to display physically his or her skills in that particular profession. Apart from that, the candidate will also have to prove sufficient professional training in the field.

Often, parts of the interview may seem to have little or no bearing on the job in question. The behavioral aspects of a job interview seek to establish the candidate’s ability to tackle difficult situations. They also focus on the candidate’s ability to take personal decisions, shoulder responsibility, handle or interact with a team and effectively represent the employer’s company.

Nowadays, there is increased emphasis on pre-interview preparation. This is especially true in the case of selection procedures in business schools and high-end business jobs. By studying the requirements of such interviews beforehand, a candidate can greatly increase his or her chances of selection.

How to Choose a Career After High School

Choosing a career after high school is a tough task for most students. This article has some useful suggestions on how to choose a career after high school. Have a look…
How to Choose a Career After High School
Joe has just completed his high school education with good grades. His subjects were Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Math and Computer Science. He has scored equally good in all subjects, and hence, the problem before him is to select his further career. He is wondering whether he should major in the finance field or choose computer engineering. What should he do?

Like Joe, many students are seen searching for an answer for the biggest question before them – how to choose a career after high school. Choosing the right career after high school is important because a person has to work in his area of graduation after passing out of university, and if he is not interested in the particular field, then his progress will be very slow. Many a times, students are not able to realize their interests, hidden talents and inclinations, and that is why a career test for high school students has assumed significant importance. However, a career test is one of the parts of the process of choosing a career. So, let us acquaint ourselves with the complete procedure, below.

Choosing Suitable Career After high School

Your Interests
In high school, you study a variety of subjects. So, it becomes easy for you to find out which subjects you like and which you don't. One thing I would like to suggest is that you should not link your interests with your marks all the time. It may happen that you end up scoring more in a subject which you do not like, and you do the mistake of opting for a specialization in it later on. Choosing the subject which we really like helps to learn faster and achieve great heights in our career.

Your Abilities
One thing which everyone thinking of how to choose a career for high school should remember is that abilities are as important as self interests. Though you have an interest in a particular subject, you should have the ability to interpret it, remember the concepts, and apply them practically. You should consult your teachers to help you know your strengths and weaknesses, as they have spent several years in the education industry.

Career Growth Opportunities
While choosing a career, you should look at the growth opportunities available in the field, so that you can move up the corporate ladder fast. This can be done by meeting job market experts, industry insiders, and conducting a self research. Before choosing a career after high school, make sure that it is in hot demand, and job opportunities are available in plenty to secure your future. Lack of opportunities can create difficulties for you to achieve your ambitions in life.

Money!
Yeah, we cannot completely ignore the money factor while selecting a career. After all students need to recover their educational expenses and earn well to live a better life. So, researching about the salary packages for the jobs which you can get after doing a particular course, becomes essential.

Career Tests
Career tests can help you know your interests and likes. Till today, millions of students have benefited from these careers tests. These tests include objective questions having multiple choices from all subjects, such as reasoning, logical thinking, math, social sciences, physics, engineering, etc. After the test, you can get advice from career counselors, who will ask you about your preferred career choice, and tell you how you need to prepare to achieve success in it.

Hopefully, this article on how to choose a career after high school will help you take the most important decision in your life. It is always advantageous to go as per our instincts, and do what our inner minds tells us, and not have unrealistic expectations. Good luck and do well!

Creative Things to do When Bored at Home

A Budding Writer
Write a story. Yes! everyone has a story to tell. It can be about some funny incident in your class or office or it can be about something unusual you experienced when on a holiday or even about something you feel strongly about that you saw on television yesterday. Just pick up a pen or get on the keyboard and start creative writing. Who knows, if it turns out well, you might be able to get it published! If not, start your own blog and post all your stories there.

What's Cooking
One of the fun things to do when bored is to try a new food recipe. Whether you know cooking or not, search for some recipe from the Internet, of a dish that you always wanted to eat, but did not get a chance. Buy the ingredients required from the market and cook it yourself at home. Although, it may not taste great if you do not know how to cook, still, you will feel great trying something new. And just in case it turns out yummy, invite your boyfriend over for lunch. This is indeed one of the most spontaneous, creative things to do for your boyfriend.

Getting Rich
Another thing to do when youre bored at home is to chart out your future plans. If you are someone who equates success with money, start thinking of ways to make more money. Come up with various kinds of business ideas. If you seriously like any of the ideas, break it further into how you will go about implementing it. This is what is called putting constructive use to your free time.

Venturing Out
One of the main reasons why you're feeling bored in life is that you have not learned something new in a while. Is your routine confined to your home and office or home and school? If yes, then you probably need to add some excitement to your life by learning new things. It can be a new language or a musical instrument or a dance form. Take your pick according to your interests and capabilities. Once you start learning any of these, you will need to practice at home as well and thus, you will not be left with any free time to feel bored.

Mind Spacing
It is said that our surroundings affect our brain. Has it been a while since you decorated your room? If yes, then why not make a few changes, such as add some flashy curtains or buy a new rug for your room. If you are not in the mood to shop, then simply move around the furniture a bit to change the look of your room and create more space. Believe me, this is one of the things to do when you are bored that will do wonders for the way you feel.

Creative Things to do When Bored for Kids

Housework...
Kids have a shorter attention span and you would need to plan a number of creative activities to keep them occupied during their free time. If you are a working parent, and have a lot on your hands to do on a holiday, one of the fun things that you can plan with your kids is to have them share your housework. Car washing, gardening, grocery shopping - these are some of the activities which kids really enjoy, plus they get to learn a lot too, while participating in them.

Collage...
Making a collage which kids can later stick on their room wall is another of the interesting thing to do while bored for kids. For this activity, give the kids some old magazines and have them make cut-outs of the things that they like. Later they can paste these pictures on chart paper and you can help them put it up in their room. Change the collage on a monthly basis as it will give the kids something to do every month.

Plant-Care...
To teach the kids the importance of saving the environment, one of the creative activities you can plan is to have them grow a plant. For this, give the kids a pot, painting colors and brush. The kids can paint the pot in whichever way they want. Later, you help the kids place soil and a small plant in it. Your kid gets to keep the plant in the room and from then on he has to take care of it everyday.

Photography...
Take the kids on a nature walk to a nearby park and have them click photographs of birds, flowers, insects, trees, shrubs, etc. that they find fascinating. They can even click photographs of people and other children in the park. These days there are digital cameras available for kids above the age of four as photography has become very popular amongst them. So, invest in a good one for your budding photographer.

These are some of the creative things to do when bored. You may further refer to list of hobbies to know more of such creative and enjoyable activities. As you can see, there are host of fun activities that you can take up to keep yourself as well as your kids engaged. So, take your pick from any of these and covert your free idle time into a new, learning experience!

Camping trips can be fun when organized properly. If you want to take your first steps towards camping, this article will help you understand the basics for camping for beginners.

Camping for Beginners: Common Questions for Camping

There are many questions that you may want to ask. Following is a list of common questions that every beginner for camping will ask. I'll recommend not to take up camping, till you get all your questions answered and understand the requirements of camping.

Where do I camp?
There are two types of camping grounds, public and private. Public camping grounds offer a variety of places to choose from like national parks, national forests, Bureau of Land Management Areas and state parks. Each one of these, in turn, have many campsites within themselves. All of them, more or less, offer the same amenities like restrooms, hot water for showers, shopping areas, etc., which are very helpful for camping for beginners. You can get a list of the different camping grounds on line and its always better to book a place for camp beforehand. It is not very costly to camp at such places. They may charge anywhere between $10 to $25 per night. Private campsites may or may not offer the amenities and they may also charge more. Moreover, they allow only a certain number of campers on their grounds.

Another alternative is to pitch a tent and camp at a hillside or in wilderness. However, you should take care to find out if it is allowed in your selected place. In such cases, remember that there are no amenities like a laundry, toilets, shops, etc. nearby. You will need to carry all the basic necessities with you when you go camping. If your family is not comfortable being out in tents, you can always hire or buy a camping trailer and have a nice time camping in the wild.

What camping equipments do I carry?
The answer to this question will depend on where you camp. If you camp in wilderness, you will need to carry a tent, a cooler for your camping food and drinks, sleeping bags and pads, cooking supplies like charcoal and spatula, kettle, cups, plates, spoons and a pot or two. You can buy all the camping gear in sports stores or at Wal Mart. Don't buy expensive equipments as you are not yet experienced in taking care of them.

If you camp at public campgrounds, there is a good chance that you will get a grill or a barbecue and all the cooking ingredients in the shops. Apart from that, you will have to carry the other necessities like clothes, tents, sleeping bags, etc.

What clothes do I carry while camping?
Make sure that you wear full sleeves while camping. It is important to carry some sweaters with you so that you are protected in case it becomes cold in the night in the woods. It is better to take some extra change of clothes with you. Rain gear is also important.

How to set up a camp?
While setting up your camp, you will have to consider a lot of things. Pitching tents at an elevated spot is essential. Don't ever choose a slope as you might roll down it. It's best to choose a spot close to a water source like a spring to avoid wasting time in getting water. While looking for the above two conditions when setting up your tent, also look for a shade to shelter you throughout the day. See to it that you have adequate area to cook your food.

Listening Activities for Students

For better understanding of certain concepts in a language, you need to listen effectively. Here are some listening activities for students, so that they not only hear but listen and learn new things.
When you are sitting in a restaurant there are many people talking, the waiters taking orders, vending machines being operated, or the cooks cooking in the open kitchen. You can hear all these sounds, because you have ears which are meat to hear the sounds. But if you happen to overhear your neighbor's conversation, you find out he/she is talking about their day at office! This is called active listening, where you not only hear a certain piece of information but concentrate on it, analyze and try to understand the concept.

Listening is a very important activity for our existence, as it is one of the main factors in communication, which all of us need and should be inculcated within us at a raw age. This ability to understand, evaluate and interpret the words which are heard physically could be used to reduce conflicts and improve relationships, to teach others what you understand, and to make life easier and healthier. We have a few listening activities for students, as they are in the best learning age. Take a look and use some of the active listening activities for your benefit!

Active Listening Activities for Students

When a child is sent to school, the first activity which is carried out is introducing yourself! When a class of little children tell their name out loud and clear, it is called the most effective listening activity as the other kids start memorizing it and gradually associate the person with his/her name. After this, there are many other listening activities for students such as learning alphabets and numbers, shapes and colors, words and sentences, which are repeated many times. It is very important that students trying to learn something new, listen to themselves speak it out loudly as when you hear yourself, you can memorize and learn more quickly. This rule is applicable for individuals and students of all ages, thus giving everyone a chance to learn and listen more effectively. We have a few such activities mentioned below, read on.

Various Sounds

  • When you want to recognize regular sounds which exist around you all the time, but haven't paid attention to them yet, the simplest thing to do is make a list of all of them and listen to them. You can use this activity for yourself, for kids or any other students you are trying to train.
  • It is also one of the simplest and most effective active listening exercises one can go through for better listening skills. Visit the beach, join a music class, sit in a park, go to a lake or river side or a farmland, visit a construction site, or any other place where you would get to hear a variety of natural sounds.
  • The sounds of flowing water or bubbles, musical instruments, strong winds or breeze, insects and animals, children playing and swinging, bulldozers rolling tar on the road or drilling machines demolishing the road, etc., are all the unique sounds which are present around us, but all you need to do is listen.

Phone Numbers

  • Many a times, when we are trying to memorize somebody's phone number, we think they are easy to remember for the next 2 minutes, but forget them right after 1 minute! Well, that's because we follow the wrong way of memorizing.
  • Like alphabets, numbers are also learned or memorized the best when they are spoken loudly, so we could hear them and store them in our brain. Therefore, try to read out all the phone numbers in your contacts list loudly and clearly to yourself or the other person.
  • Through this activity, the precise numbers are heard by us and because we concentrate and understand the order, it is easy to memorize them. Once you have learned these with respect to their owners, you will remember all the phone numbers for the exact owner automatically.

Games and Activities

  • Another great one of the listening activities for college students, could be playing some knowledgeable games with those students which need to learn active listening skills. These games could be group activities or could be played individually.
  • If you are teaching these effective listening techniques to a group of students, the importance of listening, you could play games such as; Pass a message, Lip read or mime games, draw with description (one partner describes verbally and the other partner draws without looking at him).
  • Narrating speeches, hearing audio clips of well known songs or movies, voices of famous people, etc., are some of the activities which you could use to make students recognize the sounds. If they are able to recognize the right people, songs, or movies, it means they have been listening to these examples carefully.
With these simple listening activities for students, you can very easily teach them the importance of listening along with observing the details of things around them. Developing these senses and sharpening them is very essential for the overall development of any individual.
