Improve Your Students' Skills with Puzzles and Games

Incorporate games and puzzles into your classroom for a great way to keep children learning while they play.
Pattern recognition, spatial relationships, and logical thinking are all necessary skills as students learn to read, do math, and develop problem-solving strategies. Having a big collection of puzzles and games on hand can make developing these skills fun.

Many children's magazines contain creative, age-appropriate games that reinforce the content of the text, but that's only one source. You can also enlist parents to contribute crossword puzzles and other games they find from newspapers and magazines.

Sudoku is all the rage now; papers from the local daily to the New York Times carry at least one sudoku puzzle in every issue. Each puzzle consists of a large square, divided into nine sections in a 3X3 pattern, each of which is divided into nine more squares, also in a 3x3 pattern. The object of the game is to place the numerals from 1 to 9 in each of the nine squares of each section; numerals cannot be repeated within the sections or across or up and down in any line of squares. A great way for older kids to practice pattern recognition and problem solving strategies, the sudoku puzzles range from the simple to the maddeningly difficult; the New York Post offers both an easy and difficult puzzle in every issue, and sells sudoku books as well. A number of websites offer free sukodu puzzles playable online, and offer software programs which can be purchased and downloaded; start with sudoku.com.

Mah jongg is an ancient Asian game traditionally played with decorative tiles arranged and stacked in a three-dimensional pattern. The object of the game is to find two identical tiles and remove them from the pile; the trick is that the tiles cannot have another tile located on top of it or to the left or right; one side has to be free. Sort of like an elaborate version of "Old Maid" or "Go Fish," the tiles have both simple and complex patterns; several patterns have subtle differences, demanding fine-tuned pattern recognition skills in addition to spatial relationship abilities. Simplified versions are available for younger children. Kids who enjoy tactile kinesthetic activities will have fun manipulating the tiles; visually oriented computer fans may prefer one of the many mah jongg programs available online. Both multi-player and solitaire versions are available; play a solitaire version free; or check out multiple versions of mah jongg for kids.

Yahooligans.com includes a huge collection of games and other interesting info for kids. Other websites offer games which can be played online with other web surfers around the world, but if you're thinking of allowing your students access to a game site online, be sure to check it out and monitor the kids frequently, to make sure they don't end up in communication with the wrong people.

You may want to use these games as a springboard for yourself or your students to develop their own games, for themselves or for younger kids. A version of sudoku for younger kids, for example, might involve pictures of nine different kinds of animals; find a few very simple sudoku puzzles and substitute nine different animal pictures for the numbers. Create a giant sudoku grid and make big cardboard or wooden animal pieces to make it easy for little hands to manipulate them. However you decide to incorporate games and puzzles into your classroom, it's a great way to keep kids learning while they play.

Accompany them in these different outdoor fall activities for kids, and have them perceive the beauty of the outdoors during fall in a completely unique manner.

Fun Fall Outdoor Activities for Kids

While having your little ones perform any of these outdoor fall activities for kids, ensure that you, or someone, is around for supervision. Some of these activities cannot be performed without the help of an adult, and to prevent any bitter occurrences, ensure that there is someone who is keeping a watch and allowing them to have the maximum amount of fun with these activities.

Plant a Tree
While you may assume spring is a good time to plant trees, fall, though not ideal, can be a good time to plant trees too, as it is cooler and easier to work outdoors. Get a tree seedling (such as a fruit tree), and accompany your little ones while helping them to dig a small hole in your garden to plant the seedling. Add water into the hole, and plant the tree, by covering the roots with soil. Surround the base of the tree with dead leaves, bark and wood chips, that will be used by the tree for nourishment. Have your little one water the tree regularly and watch it grow as the fruit of one of the many outdoor activities for kids that she/he performed and enjoyed.

Fall Leaf Print
This outdoor fall activity for kids will truly get them to enjoy and appreciate nature, and create some beautiful arts and crafts in the process. Take them out for a stroll, and have them collect different types of fresh and moist fall leaves. Keep a watch for leaves such as poison ivy, sumac or poison oak. Also keep at hand these items: muslin cloth (unbleached – 12"x 12"), wooden blocks, glue, scissors, old newspaper, and a grocery bag. Anywhere outdoors, locate a hard working surface, and place a newspaper on it, followed by the muslin cloth. Randomly place a leaf on the cloth. Use the wooden block to bang hard on the leaf, so as to leave a print on the cloth. Ensure you are supervising this activity lest the kids hurt their hands. This may be slightly noisy, but that is exactly the fun part about this activity. Continue the same process with leaves of different colors, shapes and sizes, till the entire cloth is covered in leaf prints. Allow the cloth to dry, while you cut the grocery bag into the shape of a frame. Use the glue to stick the muslin cloth on the frame. Use this unique product of your fun activity as a gift for any occasion, or simply to adorn the walls of your little ones' rooms.

Rock Ornaments
This is one of the many fall outdoor activities with kids that will enable them to take in the beauty of nature while doing something creative and productive such as kids crafts. Just like in the previous activity, go on a rock collecting spree with the kids. Try and pick up rocks that are smooth, and shaped in the form of the earth or ladybugs, or any such shape that resembles any other object. Clean the rocks with water and dry them. Now paint over the rocks in different manners, depending on their shape. To protect the paint, make a watery mixture of flour and water, and coat the rock with it after the paint has dried. Get as creative as possible, and create different rock ornaments for your garden, or use them as paperweights, or simply gift them to your near and dear ones.

The Leaf Pile Game
This is one of those outdoor fall activities for kids that is most popular among all age groups. Simply have the kids help you rake all fall leaves into piles at different spots, and have them jump in and enjoy. To make a game out of this one, let one kid hide in any one of the many leaf piles, and suddenly emerge to scare the other ones and proceed with a game of tag. Let them use these leaves to have a leaf fight. Use the beautiful fall leaves to make the most of these outdoor activities.

Create Your Own Fossils
For the more curious kids, this is the perfect activity to enjoy this fall. It also serves as one of the better preschool fall activities to be enjoyed outdoors. On one of your long walks around, ask them to collect flowers, leaves, sticks and rocks of different shapes and sizes. Prepare some clay, and press hard, the different collected items in different pieces of flattened clay, to leave an impression. Now prepare some Plaster of Paris mixed in water. Remove the object from the clay, and pour some of the mixture into the impression, ensuring all crevices are filled. Allow it to dry and remove the objects from the clay. For a more authentic finish, paint the fossils in different colors. The kids are sure to enjoy this one.

During fall, you can make the most of the outdoors by having your kids engage in these fun filled outdoor fall activities for kids. It allows them to experience the beauty nature has to offer, and revel in the wonderful weather. All the while being creative, and using their skills to create interesting pieces of artwork.

Hide and Seek
This is one of the most fun outdoor games for kids. To play this game decide on one kid who will be the "It". "It" closes his eyes and counts till twenty, while the other children hide themselves behind swings, trees, vehicles, any buildings in the vicinity, etc. After counting twenty, "It" opens his eyes and tries to find the other children. When all the children are "found" by "it", the one who was "found" first, becomes the new "it" and the game continues as usual.

All Aboard
If you are looking for some team building games, then this kids outdoor game fits the bill perfectly. Make all the children stand in a circle. Next, draw a circle in the middle. As soon as you whistle, the children have to run to this drawn circle and adjust themselves in it. No one is allowed to step out of this circle. Once they do this, they again have to go and stand in their respective places. Now, reduce the area of the drawn circle by drawing another circle in it. When you whistle this time, the kids have to adjust themselves in this reduced area. Likewise, you keep on reducing the area of the circle. As children adjust themselves in the drawn circles, they build physical proximity, sometimes they hold each other with hands or step on one another, to remain in the circle. All this fosters team spirit in them.

Fun Outdoor Games for Teenagers

Community Scavenger Hunt
An engaging and educative game for teenagers is to plan a scavenger hunt for them wherein they are given certain community tasks to do. Divide the teens into groups of five each. Next give them a list of tasks that they have to carry out in the neighborhood such as cleaning someone’s backyard, watering someone’s garden, doing grocery shopping for any old couple living on their own, etc. Such activities for teenagers help in sensitizing them towards the needs of others.

Web of Hands
A team building game for teens is to have them stand in a circle. Next, ask each one of them to bring forward their right hand and hold any two other people’s right hand with it, except for those standing on their immediate sides. Once they are done, instruct them to do the same with their left hands. Now, you will see that a kind of web is formed. The rule of the game is that teens have to disengage themselves from this web, without leaving each other’s hands. As the teens work together and come up with strategies to dislodge themselves from this "web of hands", the interaction brings them closer as a group.
