Recreation can be anything from reading a book to listening to music to spending time at the beach to watching movies. Now when you come to think of it, there might be hundreds of games you can play for your enjoyment. Plus, you even have the option on playing them indoors and outdoors. So how can someone make up their mind which to choose? Simple; just follow what you heart and mind desires the most and just go with it. The main point here is to completely forget about any worries or stress you may have and to get a new perspective towards life. Keeping that idea in mind, we will move on to the different types of recreation games and activities.

Outdoor Recreational Games
  • Ball Games - When I say ball games, I mean every kind of outdoor games which can be played with a ball. This includes basketball, volleyball, baseball, dodgeball, tennis, softball, golf, lacrosse, street hockey, cricket, and so much more. These games are energetic, heart-pumping, and can be played in groups. So invite friends over and/or gather your family on a Sunday afternoon to play them.
  • Beach Games - As the name suggests, these games are played while you're at the beach. This includes volleyball, surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, building sand castles, and many more. And the best part about playing beach games is that you can spend the entire day at the beach with family and friends, grab a picnic basket, and in the evening, make S'mores. Doesn't that sound fun?
  • Snow Games - These games are specially played when there's snow outside and you just can't stay indoors. You can sledge down the hill, snowboard, ski, make snow angels, go ice skating or snowshoeing, build a snowman or an igloo, and have a snowball fight. Now that sounds like hours and hours of fun time in the snow. Don't forget to wear proper attire and keep yourself safe.
  • Water Sports - Now I know that we already spoke about beach sports, but there are so many other water sports that has its own category. Water sports will include kayaking, canoeing, rowing, boating, water rafting, water polo, water slide, underwater hockey or rugby (oh yeah!!), skurfing, jet ski, windsurfing, and tons of more games. So grab your swimsuits and get going.
Indoor Recreational Games
  • Board Games - As kids, we used to play board games all the time. So why not now? When bored, get board games (wink). You can play Monopoly, Parcheesi, Chess, Backgammon, Battleship, Clue, Pictionary, and Scotland Yard. Come rain or snow, board games are sure shot way of having fun no matter what the weather forecast is.
  • Playing Cards Games - Cards are always a great way to spend time, whether you're at home, at a friend's, or while traveling. So why not play some cards when you're bored, sitting at home? Call your friends over and play some Solitaire, Rummy, Bridge, Poker, Go Fish, or invent your own game. Just remember, no gambling or betting with money because that doesn't constitute as a recreational game.
  • Sports Games - Alright, now this category might seem a bit confusing so let me make it clear. By sports games, I mean indoor games. This includes, indoor squash, tennis, ping pong, billiards, hide and seek, foosball, and air hockey. Some of these games test your physical strength. And you know what, in the end, even after playing for hours and getting tired, the next day you'll wake up fresh.
  • Video Games - An all time favorite recreational game is video games. You can never get bored of playing them as the games will never get old. Depending on your age, likes, and dislikes, you can play different video games on PlayStation, Xbox, Wii, on your laptop or desktop, or even online.

Health Benefits of Leisure

With people focusing more on 'monetarily beneficial' activities in life like studying or working two three jobs a day, they have started considering leisure activities as a 'non-productive' way of passing time. If you too think the same, think again! This article will take you through the health benefits of leisure activities and how it can help you living a more relaxed and healthy life.
"Those who decide to use leisure as a means of mental development, who love good music, good books, good pictures, good plays, good company, good conversation - what are they? They are the happiest people in the world." ~ William Lyon Phelps

No matter how much you are engrossed in your daily schedule of going to your school/ work and coming back home carrying the burden of the pressures from the outside world, there comes a point in each and everyone's life when the body and mind needs a break from the daily responsibilities and pressures of life! I needn't explain the amount of stress and related health issues that the demanding lifestyle of today imposes on each and everyone of us. With so many deadlines to complete and bills to pay, who can even think of taking out time to spend on some leisure activities? Right? I mean one would rather focus on doing some pending job or sleep at home, rather than arranging to go out and waste one's time doing 'non-productive' activities. If that is what you think, then you need to keep reading this article on health benefits of leisure activity to understand how you are depriving yourself from living a healthy and happy life.

Health Benefits of Leisure and Recreation

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy! This saying is definitely based on the fact that almost each and every person is suffering from, or is under the risk of developing health and mental conditions due to stress and pressure. According to the National Health Interview Survey, 75% of the population suffers from stress in every two weeks. This means that getting involved in leisure activities once in a year is not sufficient to refresh your mind and reduce stress. You need to get involved in leisure activities at least once in a week... this is why we have weekends, remember! Even God wants you to take a break and relax quite often! Have a look at the health benefits of leisure activities in children and adults mentioned below and give yourself a chance to breathe and relax.

Physical Health Benefits of Leisure
We all would agree to the fact that getting involved in leisure and recreational activities acts as a stress buster, right? With the absence of leisure activities in one's life, the prolonged existence of stress also triggers various physical health complications like heart problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, and so on. Mentioned below are some key points on how leisure can prove to be beneficial to physical health.

♥ Reduces Obesity
Desk jobs that adults do, or absence of physical activities for children can lead to obesity, which itself is linked to various health issues. So, instead of joining a gym, spend some 'fun' time in activities like hiking, camping, skiing, and swimming to shed those extra kilos.
♥ Reduces Risk Factors of Chronic Diseases
As mentioned earlier, a combination of stress and obesity can lead you under the risk zone of various chronic diseases like diabetes, heart problems, blood pressure, Osteoporosis and even cancer! Because engaging in recreational activities reduces the risk factors like stress and obesity, it also reduces the chances of developing these diseases.
♥ Strengthens Your Immune System
Research reveals that people who are more physically active tend to have reduced stress levels in their body and mind. They are less likely to fall ill and have reduced medical expenses and hospital stays as compared to a person who is physically inactive.
♥ Increases Life Expectancy
Who doesn't want to live a long, healthy, and happy life? And it is possible only when one tends to bring about a balance in work and play and focuses on spending some quality time in doing both. A balanced lifestyle is the only key to healthy and prosperous living.

Mental Health Benefits of Leisure
Both mental and physical health is interrelated to each other! If you are at a mental equilibrium, you will also be able to achieve a physical equilibrium. We have already discussed the physical health benefits of leisure activities. Let us have a look at the mental health benefits of leisure activities.

♥ Reduces Stress Levels
Too much of pressure and load leads to stress. So, what should one do to relieve stress? Take off the pressure from your mind which is possible by relaxing yourself through some leisure activities. Enjoy the summers by swimming, taking a sunbath, or go camping with friends and family over the weekend. All this will definitely help you reduce your stress levels and rejuvenate your mind.
♥ Minimizing the Chances of Depression
Most of the people suffering from depression have led themselves under this condition due to too much pressure from either work or family conditions. With you allowing your mind to relax, calm down, and rejuvenate often, there are less chances that you would suffer from mental conditions like anxiety and depression.
♥ Increases Self Esteem
Most of the people following a monotonous schedule in their daily life, and dealing with pressures, unrealistic expectations and load of work and responsibilities at the same time, tend to develop a low self esteem, which is the first step towards getting into depression. With leisure and recreational activities giving you a chance to end the monotony of life and explore the 'fun' and 'relaxing' aspects of it, you will find an increase in your self esteem.
♥ Increases the Enthusiasm of Living Life
With all the aforementioned benefits of leisure activities, you will eventually see yourself living your life with a lot of enthusiasm. Of course, there will be work pressures, family responsibilities and the never ending expectations and demands, but taking a 'break' will definitely give you an enthusiasm of living life to the fullest!

So these were some of the main importance of leisure activities. I am sure that after reading the aforementioned benefits, you would never think of leisure activities as 'unproductive' or 'unnecessary'. So remember, wherever there is too much of pressure or stress, instead of hanging on and continuing to get more engrossed in the immense pressure, take a break and get ready to refresh your mind through some leisure activities that you love to do. Remember, a refreshed mind and body is more productive. Have a happy and healthy life. Take care.

Benefits of Leisure and Recreation

With the world getting more and more competitive and fast-paced, who has the time to reap the benefits of leisure and recreation? Right? But, what if I tell you that the activities that are given the least priority in your daily schedule would actually prove to be rewarding in each and every sphere of life?
"The word recreation is really a very beautiful word. It is defined in the dictionary as "the process of giving new life to something, of refreshing something, of restoring something." This something, of course, is the whole person." ~ Bruno Hans Geba

They say that you get to live this life only once, so why not live it to the fullest? How do you live life to the fullest? Trust me, more than 90% of the people would actually say, 'how can you enjoy life unless you have the financial security and the TIME to indulge in leisure rather than making ends meet'? Is this what you would say too? Well, we all wish to live life to the fullest, but meeting the daily demands of life makes us so occupied, that indulging in the 'non-productive' activities just to have some 'fun', is something that doesn't come under our list of priorities regularly. I mean, when it comes to doing so many things in a short span of 24 hours in a day, you would obviously do what is necessary for survival and not for fun. What if I tell you that you are less likely to survive in the long run if you avoid leisure and recreational activities? What if I tell you that leisure and recreational activities would actually allow you to refuel all the energy that you need to deal with the daily pressures of work and home? If your life is all about getting up in the morning, going to work, coming back home, and going to sleep, then you really need to know the benefits of leisure and recreation, and how they can contribute in making your life all the more relaxed and productive at the same time. Read on...

Advantages of Leisure and Recreational Activities

"Life lived amidst tension and busyness needs leisure. Leisure that recreates and renews. Leisure should be a time to think new thoughts, not ponder old ills." ~ Neil Strait

Very well said by Neil Strait! I mean we feel more than happy when we get the time to even relax for a while and take a nap. But, the busyness of life makes our mind occupied with thoughts, thoughts that do not help in relaxing us, but make us all the more restless! Which is why, whenever you get the time, make sure that you engage yourself in leisure activities that rejuvenate your mind and not make you ponder over what is going on in your life. Engaging in recreational activities refreshes your mind, makes you more healthy and active, increases your enthusiasm to live life, improves your health, makes you more socially active, makes you more happy, reduces stress, makes you more positive in life..., and the list goes on and on and on! Mentioned below are some detailed examples of the health and social benefits of leisure and recreation. Have a look!

✔ If Health is Wealth, then Leisure is Your Key to Wealth!
"People who cannot find time for recreation are obliged sooner or later to find time for illness." ~ John Wanamaker

I have written an entire article on the health benefits of leisure and recreation! I mean I can spend all day talking about it! To begin with, what are the main health issues that have become a global concern these days? Obesity, heart problems, diabetes, right? The main causes of all these health issues are stress and lack of physical activities. Leisure and recreational activities would actually allow you to relax your mind, and make your body more fit and active, thereby minimizing the chances to develop chronic diseases like those mentioned above. You will have a strengthened immune system, reduced stress levels, and ultimately an increased life expectancy and self-esteem. Don't you think all this is required for a happy and productive life?

✔ A Healthy Mind and Body are More Productive!
"Life is best enjoyed when time periods are evenly divided between labor, sleep, and recreation... all people should spend one-third of their time in recreation which is rebuilding, voluntary activity, never idleness." ~ Brigham Young

I actually don't think there is a need to elaborate on this point! All you need is a healthy, active, and stress free mind and body to take on the pressure that you need to tackle in your daily life. I mean why do people go for long holidays, or wish to take a mini break or something when dealing with a monotonous or stressful daily environment, be it at work or at home? This is because when you are having some fun in activities that take your mind off the daily schedule, you are ready to pounce back with a positive attitude and a focused and alert mind.

✔ Leisure Gives You a Chance for Social Bonding!
"You can learn more about a man in one hour of play than in a lifetime of conversation." ~ Plato

Your mind and body become still when you don't give them variety in your daily life. Man is a social animal, I mean you need to interact with others in order to improve your self-esteem and confidence! Forget about bonding with new people, nowadays people don't even have the time to bond with their own family. Getting involved with recreational activities allows you to bond with your family members and strengthen your interpersonal relationships. Have you heard of the song Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin? It's about the relationship between a busy workaholic dad and his son... and how the busy life never gave the dad a chance to bond with the son. It is sad that in today's world, most of the families lack interpersonal relationships and emotional bonding. So, make sure that you do take out some time to spend with your family and friends. You will be more happy and satisfied with life, trust me!

✔ Leisure Curbs the Negativity in You!
"An idle mind is the Devil's workshop..., so is the case with a monotonous life, if not the Devil's workshop, it isn't heaven either!

Have you ever wondered why does our society have crime and criminals? I was just reading about some of the famous criminals in the United States. To my surprise, most of them were abused in some form or the other as kids..., the abusers were the parents or the guardians. If you try to understand as to why we become abusive, you will find its roots in our inner frustration and pressure that becomes too much to handle. A calm parent would deal with the kids in a much more calm way. For example, if the kid spills a glass of water on the floor, a calm parent would ask the kid if he is OK, and say that it's OK, we all make mistakes and learn from it. On the other hand, if you are frustrated from your work or otherwise, you might start abusing the kid as to how incapable and worthless he or she is..., trust me, I have seen many parents do that. Kids who don't get a secure and loving environment tend to go astray and get involved in unhealthy activities and lifestyle, and the cycle keeps going from generations to generations.

✔ Leisure and Recreation Gives you a Chance to Re-discover Yourself!
"It is in his pleasure that a man really lives; it is from his leisure that he constructs the true fabric of self." ~ Agnes Repplier

We always think of our school and college days, and how life was so 'enjoyable' back then! Well, then what has changed? Am sure the places are still there, the people are still there, what isn't there is the TIME and the ENTHUSIASM. The world is still the same, if it has ways to pressure your mind and your life, it also has ways to take them off your head..., well, at least for a while!

So these were some of the main points, which pretty much sum up the importance of recreation and leisure in one's life! Trust me, all the pressures, problems and issues in life can be sorted with a calm and relaxed mind and body. So, no matter how busy you are, how caught up you are with your deadlines and targets, give leisure and recreational activities like camping, trekking, hiking etc., if not more, then equal importance in your life. They will rejuvenate not only your mind, but your entire life! Have a peaceful and satisfying life!
